Windows Server 2008 Enterprise – SAN disks Offline

July 31, 2012

Vranger installed on a Windows Server 2008 enterprise machine. Backing up a VSphere 5 environment.

Backups work fine. Restores complete successfully. However if I tried to boot any VM after restoring it I got “Operating system not found”.

Having a look in Windows Disk Manager I can see all the LUNs on the SAN but they are marked Offline with the message “Disk offline because of a policy set by the administrator”

In Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition SAN disks are set to Offline by default.

To confirm this have a look at the default policy:

DISKPART> san

SAN Policy: Offline Shared

DISKPART>

Using Disk Manager made each of the Luns Online.

Vranger restores complete and VMs boot fine.
